The artsy fartsy kids have had quite a few cell phones over the years, usually the prepaid kind because they haven’t mastered the art of sending less than a thousand text messages per day.  I know some parents equate them with privelege, but in my opinion, they’re the technology of the generation, and kids deserve to be able to use them.

Making cell phone covers is one way that they can take better care of their phones.  Stuffing the phone in their pocket is what they usually do, but sometimes they don’t have a pocket and the phone needs to go in their purse.  Have you ever seen an artsy fartsy kid’s purse?  They’re filled with crumbs, dust, pebbles, fuzz, and all sorts of other things that you don’t wanna toss your cellphone around in.  A protective cover is a great way to keep the phone clean and functioning at its peak.

Since each phone model is a different size, I had a hard time finding one cell phone cover pattern that fit every phone, so we made custom cell phone covers with felt.  You could use fleece to make a cell phone cover, too.

We laid the phone on a piece of felt and traced around it with a pen.  Then, we repeated the process so we’d have two identical felt tracings of the phone.

Then we cut both pieces, about 1/4 inch past our traced line.

We stitched along the line we’d traced, leaving one side open (the narrow side for a flip phone and the wider side for the texting phone)

Then we turned the covers inside out, to hide away the seams, and stitched a small bit of elastic loop to one side and a button to the other.

In place of a button you could use a felted flower or a really chunky bead.  You could also stitch on a larger elastic loop, and use it like a rubber band to keep the cover on.

This could easily become a recycled activity if you use fleece from a spent blankie, a favorite sweatshirt or old pajamas.
